Yappie on stream

What you can put on a stream, and the quickest good setup.

Streaming with Yappie is mostly a few settings and one link. Yappie can sit on your stream as a see-through overlay or a floating window, answer your chat's questions, post to your Twitch chat, and keep your private details off the screen. Everything lives in Settings → Streaming in the desktop app.

What you can put on a stream

  • The stream overlay. A see-through card for OBS with your Yappie, the countdown and your plan ("Focus · 2 of 4 · 50/10"). It is the thing we suggest you put on stream. See The stream overlay.
  • The pop-out. The small floating Yappie window, captured with OBS's Window Capture. A good alternative if you like how it looks. See Capture the pop-out in OBS.
  • Streamer mode. One switch that turns your email, devices, codes and other people's names into dots while you are on air. See Streamer mode.
  • Chat commands. Your viewers type !focus or !streak and your chat bot answers. Works with Nightbot, StreamElements and Fossabot. See Chat commands.
  • The Yappie bot. On Twitch, Yappie can post when a focus block or a break starts, add stream markers, and your pet can celebrate follows, subs, raids and Bits. See The Yappie bot (Twitch).
  • Sound. Soundscapes are optional. If you use them on stream, set the sound up once so it doesn't play twice. See Sound on stream.

The quickest good setup

You need the Yappie desktop app and OBS Studio on the same computer.

  1. Open Settings → Streaming and turn on Streamer mode. Your private details are hidden from now on.
  2. Under Stream overlay, turn on Turn on the overlay, pick a layout, and press Copy link.
  3. In OBS, add a Browser Source and paste the link into its URL box.
  4. Under Your plan, set your blocks and lengths (for example 4 blocks of 50 minutes with 10-minute breaks) and press Start plan. The overlay now shows where you are.
  5. Start a focus session in Yappie. The overlay counts down with you.

That is enough to go live. Add chat commands and the Twitch bot later, when you want them.

Good to know

  • These settings are about what appears on your stream. Nothing here changes how Yappie works for you when you aren't streaming.
  • The overlay and the pop-out are separate. You can use either one, or both, but most people only need the overlay.
  • Everything here is tested on Windows. On a Mac, the pop-out comes through see-through with OBS's macOS Screen Capture (Window). The overlay is an ordinary Browser Source, so nothing about it is specific to Windows. If something looks off on your setup, tell us.
