Capture the pop-out in OBS
Window Capture settings that work, how to show the countdown, and how to take Yappie off stream.
The pop-out is Yappie's small floating window: your pet, with a countdown when you want one, on a see-through background. OBS can capture it so it sits cleanly on top of your scene. If you would rather not deal with a window at all, the stream overlay does the same job and keeps one size.
Add it to OBS
- In Yappie, pop the window out. Click ⤢ in the top strip, or right-click the tray icon and choose Pop out as companion.
- In OBS, add a Window Capture source.
- For Window, choose [Yappie.exe]: Yappie Pop-out. The title never changes, so OBS finds the window again after a rename, a language change or a restart.
- Set Capture Method to Automatic (or Windows 10 (1903 and up)). Don't use BitBlt: it shows a solid black box.
- Leave Window Match Priority at its default.
- Turn Capture Cursor off, or your pointer shows whenever you hover the pop-out.
The background is truly see-through, so the pet, the ring and the bar sit on whatever is behind them in your scene.
Show the countdown
While you focus, the pop-out normally shows only the pet. The time appears on hover, or when the bar is pinned. Pin it so viewers can see it:
- Hover the pop-out to bring up its control bar.
- Press the pin button until only the time stays on screen. Its tooltip then reads "Show these only when hovered".
If you turn on Streamer mode, Yappie pins the time for you.
The size changes in a study room
When you join a study room, the pop-out grows to fit the village, and it stays that size afterwards. In OBS the source then gets bigger and can shift your layout. If you need a fixed size, set a bounding box in the source's Transform (right-click the source, then Transform, then Edit Transform). The stream overlay doesn't have this problem.
Taking Yappie off stream
Hide the source in OBS (click its eye). Don't rely on hiding Yappie to the tray: OBS keeps showing the pop-out's last frame, with the countdown stopped.
Opening the main Yappie window doesn't put it on stream. OBS follows the pop-out only, and shows nothing until the pop-out is back.
On a Mac
On a Mac, add a macOS Screen Capture source, set its method to Window and pick Yappie's pop-out. The pop-out comes through with a see-through background, the same as on Windows. The first time, macOS asks to let OBS record the screen: allow it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording, then quit OBS and open it again.
