Body doubling apps, sorted by the kind of company you want
Where to find someone to work alongside: one partner on camera, hosted groups, drop-in rooms or friends. Eight options compared, with what the research does and does not say. We make one of them, Yappie.
On this page
We make Yappie, which has people features of its own, so we list it last; weigh our view of the apps below with that in mind. Body doubling means doing your own task while someone else is present, in the same room, on a call, or even in a recording1 The term comes from a 1996 popular article rather than a study. Our post on the research starts from a 2023 survey of 220 adults, most of them neurodivergent, who described how they use it. ↩. The apps that offer it differ mainly in four ways: one partner or a group, camera on or off, booked ahead or drop in, and strangers or people you already know. Settle those four and the choice is mostly made. Every price and plan below is as the app's own website listed it on 3 October 2026.
Here are all eight in one table, in the order this post covers them; each is explained further below.
| Service | Who you work with | Camera | Booked or drop in | Free way in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Focusmate | One matched member | Required | Booked | Three sessions a week |
| Flow Club | Up to nine, with a volunteer host | As much as you can; chat-only sessions exist | Booked | Free trial, no free plan |
| Caveday | A group with a live guide, on Zoom | Encouraged, everyone muted | Booked | 14-day free trial |
| Flown | Facilitated groups, a drop-in room, recordings | Optional | Both | Free tier and 30-day trial |
| StudyStream | Whoever is in the open room | Optional, microphones muted | Drop in | One hour a day |
| Forest Plant Together | Friends you invite by code | None described | Invite by code | Free |
| Flora | Friends you add, with chat | None described | Invite friends | Free |
| Yappie | A pet beside your timer, plus friends, study groups or a stranger | None; others see your pet | Drop in with a stranger, or with friends | Free plan includes all of it |
What the research says, briefly
We read the research for What the research on body doubling supports, and where it stops. In short: 241 experiments on working near other people found effects that were small and ran both ways, a little faster on simple, repetitive work and a little less accurate on hard work. None of the three papers in that post tested a video call, a shared timer or an online room, and none measured whether company helps you start or come back the next day. So treat every service below as something to try, not a proven fix, and notice whether it works for you.
One partner, booked, on camera
Focusmate pairs you with one other member for a session you book ahead, 25, 50 or 75 minutes long (focusmate.com). A camera is required and video stays on throughout; you share goals at the start, work, and check in at the end. As of October 2026 the free plan allows three sessions a week; Plus, for unlimited sessions, is $8 a month billed yearly or $12 a month.
Where it fits: one specific person expecting you at a set time, if you are comfortable on camera with someone you have not met and can plan your sessions ahead.
A hosted group with a plan
Flow Club runs booked sessions for up to nine people, each led by a volunteer host from the community (flow.club). You share your goal, work muted, and the host brings everyone back at the end to say how it went; video is asked for "as much as you can". As of October 2026 it has no free plan but offers a free trial with no card, then costs $40 a month or $400 a year, with half price for students and non-profits.
Where it fits: a small group, a clear start and finish, and less spotlight than one-to-one.
Caveday runs guided sessions of 30 minutes, an hour or three hours, every day, on Zoom (caveday.org). A live guide leads each one and puts people in breakout rooms to check in and check out; during the work, cameras are encouraged and everyone is muted. As of October 2026 its membership page listed $39.99 a month, or $105 every three months, with a 14-day free trial; the site was also showing some visitors a different offer, so check what you see.
Where it fits: a guide setting the rhythm, including a three-hour session for long work.
Flown offers facilitated group sessions it calls Flocks, run in the browser or on Zoom, alongside recorded sessions you can play when you want company with no camera at all (flown.com). As of October 2026 it has a free tier, which its help centre lists as four community sessions a month plus access to all sessions on Fridays, and a 30-day free trial with no card.
Where it fits: guided sessions and recordings in one membership.
Drop in, no booking
StudyStream keeps focus rooms open around the clock (studystream.live). You log in, turn your camera on if you like, mute your microphone and work beside whoever is there. As of October 2026 it has a web app and iPhone and Android apps, is free for an hour a day, and has a Premium plan for unlimited time whose price its site does not list. It is for people aged 16 and over.
Where it fits: company at any hour, with nothing to book.
As of October 2026, Flown also has a drop-in room open around the clock, without a facilitator, for members who want the same thing alongside its scheduled sessions (flown.com).
People you already know
Forest has a free feature called Plant Together: you create a room, invite friends with a code, and everyone grows the same tree during one session (forestapp.cc). The stake is shared, so if one person gives up, everyone's tree dies. As of October 2026 it works across iPhone, iPad and Android. Where it fits: a group of friends who all reach for their phones, and a reason for each of you not to.
Flora, also free, lets you add friends by QR code or from your contacts and plant together in a room (flora.appfinca.com). Its rule differs from Forest's: if the host gives up, everyone's tree dies, while a guest who gives up loses only their own. As of October 2026 it is on iPhone and Android. Where it fits: the same game with a gentler penalty for guests.
Do you have to talk, and what if you miss one?
Very little talking happens anywhere on this list, as of October 2026. On Focusmate you speak only at the start and end of a session (focusmate.com). Flow Club offers chat-only sessions for people who would rather type (flow.club). Caveday mutes everyone during the work (caveday.org), and StudyStream asks you to keep your microphone off (studystream.live). Flown's recordings ask nothing of you at all.
Booked services treat a no-show seriously, which is part of how they work. As of October 2026, Focusmate lowers your timeliness score if you are late or do not turn up, and can freeze an account (focusmate.com). Caveday closes each session to latecomers ten minutes after it starts (caveday.org). Drop-in rooms and the friend-based apps have no booking to miss, which is gentler, and also easier to skip without anyone noticing.
How to choose
- One person or a group? One partner (Focusmate) puts a single person on the hook; a group (Flow Club, Caveday, Flown) spreads the attention.
- How do you feel about a camera? Focusmate requires one. Flow Club, Caveday and StudyStream encourage one. Flown's recordings need none.
- Can you plan ahead? Booking helps if a set time gets you to the desk. If not, a drop-in room (StudyStream, Flown) is there when you are.
- Strangers or friends? Strangers are always available; friends make it social and harder to skip quietly.
- Try it free for a week. Notice whether you start sooner, finish more, or simply enjoy it. That is the evidence that matters for you.
- Check the price page yourself. Several of these change or vary by region.
Yappie, which we make
Yappie is a focus app first, like Forest and Flora, while the first five services above are built around a call or a shared room. Its company is built around your timer and your tasks, and where it differs from Forest and Flora is who that company can be. A virtual pet sits beside your timer, and when you want people, the free plan includes friends, 1-on-1 co-focus, study groups, and focus with a stranger, which puts you in a quiet room with whoever is waiting, "two pets, two timers, nothing to say" (myyappie.app/focus-with-a-stranger). Nobody is on camera in any of it: a stranger sees only your pet, a name on it and your country. There is no shared stake: if they leave, your timer keeps running. And because you are matched with whoever is waiting, a session with a stranger can start with a wait.
Around the company sit your tasks, which break into small steps by hand or with optional AI help, and rest: set days off and your streak holds (myyappie.app/pricing). All of it is in the free plan, with no card. Focus with a stranger needs no account and runs in a browser (myyappie.app/focus-with-a-stranger); the app itself runs on Windows, macOS and the web, and its phone apps are built but not yet in any app store (myyappie.app/download). It does not block apps or websites. Where it fits: you want company with nobody on camera and nothing to book, from a stranger, friends or a group, in the same app that holds your tasks.
